Precision Scissor Lifts for Aerospace Assembly Facility in Bangalore

Precision Scissor Lifts for Aerospace Assembly Facility in Bangalore

⚠ The Challenge

The client manufactures structural components for commercial aircraft at their Devanahalli Aerospace SEZ facility. Assembly of large fuselage panels and wing rib sections requires precise vertical positioning — workers must access different zones of 3-4 metre tall components at varying heights. Existing fixed scaffolding was slow to reconfigure (30+ minutes per height change), created FOD (Foreign Object Debris) risks and failed the latest AS 9100 audit for workspace safety compliance. The client needed adjustable-height platforms with aerospace-grade precision, zero FOD generation and full documentation.

✔ Our Solution

Nio Equipment supplied 4 precision hydraulic scissor lifts with 1-tonne capacity and 2000mm stroke, specifically engineered for aerospace assembly. Key features included: anti-vibration hydraulic damping for zero platform sway at height, powder-coated aluminium platform surface (FOD-free — no paint chips or rust), proportional valve controls for ultra-smooth 0.5mm positioning increments, ESD-safe grounding straps, and comprehensive calibration documentation meeting AS 9100 traceability requirements. Each lift was load-tested, calibrated and delivered with full material and test certificates.

Key Results

✓Positioning accuracy within 1mm across full 2000mm stroke range
✓Height change time reduced from 30+ minutes (scaffolding) to 15 seconds
✓Zero FOD incidents since installation (previously 3-4 per quarter from scaffolding)
✓AS 9100 audit passed on first attempt — scissor lifts cited as positive finding
✓Assembly throughput increased 20% from eliminated scaffolding setup time
✓Client ordered 2 additional units for their wing assembly bay within 3 months

The Challenge

Bangalore’s aerospace corridor — spanning Devanahalli, Whitefield, Electronic City and Bidadi — is home to Boeing, Airbus, Safran, Collins Aerospace, HAL and dozens of Tier-1 suppliers. This client produces structural fuselage and wing components for a major European aircraft manufacturer. Assembly involves riveting, sealing and inspecting components at multiple heights on 3-4 metre tall assemblies — requiring workers to reposition frequently during each build cycle.

The existing approach used aluminium scaffolding towers that took 30+ minutes to reconfigure for each height change. Scaffolding joints generated metal particles classified as FOD — a critical quality concern in aerospace manufacturing where even a 0.5mm metal chip inside a sealed assembly can cause in-service failure. Three FOD incidents per quarter were traced to scaffolding, each requiring costly rework and quality investigation.

Our Solution

Nio Equipment designed scissor lifts that meet aerospace manufacturing standards: anti-vibration hydraulic damping eliminates platform sway during precision work, proportional valve controls allow positioning in 0.5mm increments, and the powder-coated aluminium platform surface eliminates rust and paint chip FOD. ESD grounding protects sensitive avionics components during assembly. Each unit came with full material traceability, load test certificates and calibration records as required by AS 9100.

Results

Height repositioning dropped from 30+ minutes to 15 seconds. Assembly throughput increased by 20% — entirely from eliminating scaffolding setup time. FOD incidents from work platforms fell to zero. The AS 9100 audit conducted 2 months after installation passed on first attempt, with the auditor specifically noting the scissor lift upgrade as a positive finding. The client ordered 2 additional units for their wing assembly bay within 3 months.

“In aerospace, precision is everything. These scissor lifts give us 1mm positioning accuracy, zero FOD and AS 9100 compliance in one package. Our assembly team can’t imagine going back to scaffolding.”
