GMP Goods Lift for Pharma Cold Chain Facility in Hyderabad

⚠ The Challenge
The client operates a pharmaceutical cold chain storage and distribution facility in Genome Valley — Hyderabad’s life sciences hub housing over 200 pharma, biotech and vaccine companies. Temperature-sensitive biologics and vaccines stored at -20°C needed to move between the basement cold storage, ground-floor processing area and first-floor dispatch zone. The existing service elevator was not rated for the 2-tonne pallet loads, had no temperature management and was failing WHO audit requirements. Material transit time of 8-10 minutes per trip risked temperature excursions on sensitive biologics.
✔ Our Solution
Nio Equipment designed a 2-tonne goods lift with 3 stops and a thermally insulated shaft to minimise cold-air loss from the basement cold room. The platform and shaft interior featured SS316L stainless steel cladding (pharma cold chain grade), IP66 electrics rated for condensation-heavy environments, rapid-transit hydraulic system completing a full cycle in under 90 seconds, and interlocked insulated doors at each landing. A dedicated temperature monitoring sensor in the shaft logs conditions continuously for WHO/GDP audit compliance. UPS-backed emergency lowering ensures biologics can be returned to cold storage within 60 seconds during power failure.

The Challenge
Hyderabad’s Genome Valley is India’s pharma and biotech capital — home to Dr. Reddy’s, Bharat Biotech, Biological E, Hetero and hundreds of contract manufacturers. Cold chain logistics is critical for the vaccine and biologics supply chain, where products must maintain temperature integrity from manufacturing through storage to distribution. This facility stores vaccines, insulin and monoclonal antibodies at -20°C, 2-8°C and 15-25°C zones across three floors.
Our Solution
Nio Equipment engineered a goods lift specifically for cold chain pharma: SS316L cladding resists corrosion in high-condensation environments, the thermally insulated shaft door system uses double-sealed gaskets to contain cold air, and the rapid-transit hydraulic system minimises door-open time. A shaft-mounted temperature logger records conditions every 30 seconds, generating audit-ready reports for WHO GDP inspections. The 90-second full-cycle time means a pallet of vaccines spends less than 2 minutes outside the controlled temperature zone.
Results
Temperature excursion incidents — the single biggest quality risk in pharma cold chain — dropped from 2-3 per month to zero. The WHO audit and GDP certification were achieved on first attempt, with the auditor noting the goods lift as a model installation. Cold room energy costs fell 15% because the insulated shaft system prevents the massive cold-air loss that occurred when the old elevator doors opened. The client has since contracted Nio Equipment for a similar installation at their Mumbai cold chain facility.
“In pharma cold chain, every degree matters. The insulated goods lift moves 2-tonne pallets between -20°C storage and ambient floors in 90 seconds with zero temperature excursion. We passed WHO audit because of this installation.”— Quality Assurance Director, Pharma Cold Chain Facility, Hyderabad
